Nakamura Keith Haring Collection in Hokuto

by Yuri Yuhara

In Hokuto City, amidst nature and near the Yatsugatake Mountains, a modern building houses about two hundred colorful and radiant works of art from one of the greatest pop culture icons of the 80s: Keith Haring. The works belong to Nakamura Kazuo, a Japanese businessman who has been gathering the artist's works for decades.

The Nakamura Keith Haring Art Museum was created in 2007 to display the private collection of the entrepreneur. The architectural project was overseen by one of Japan's most famous and award-winning architects, Atsushi Kitagawa, and the museum was created based on the concepts of light and darkness, chaos and hope, which can be seen in the arrangement of the exhibitions. Beginning in a dark corridor, you are led to a room also in complete darkness, and then pass through a room that shows the artist's development and best works, but then at last you find yourself in an illuminated environment called the Freedom Gallery, which is used for exhibitions of works of various artists.

In addition to being an artist, Keith Haring was also an important activist engaged in LGBT causes for awareness and struggle against AIDS, nuclear weapons, and many other socio-political issues, and his involvement is conveyed in the many posters that can be seen throughout the museum.

Keith Haring also preached that art is for everyone, and for more people to have access to his art he created the Pop Shops, which are for the purpose of making his artwork accessible to anyone, including those who first came into contact with Haring's art early in his career when the artist had been using advertising panels on the subway as his canvas.

In accordance with the artist's philosophy, the Nakamura Keith Haring Collection also houses the Pop Shop Cafe, marketing the most diverse products with the themes of his works.

The Nakamura Keith Haring Collection is open everyday from 9am to 5pm, closed only during the days of setting up new exhibits, and the admission cost is 1000 yen per person, with discounts for students and seniors.
